ON-CAMPUS SUICIDE--HIDDEN KILLER

THURSDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Back in 1998, Ron Gibori was a fraternity brother to bright, popular Jed Satow, a 20-year-old University of Arizona sophomore whose suicide that year shocked his family and friends.

"I made a promise at his memorial service that I would try and do something to make sure other students like myself would never have to lose a friend," Gibori said.

Then, less than six months later, another of Gibori's fraternity brothers took his own life. "I realized then that the promise I had made at Jed's memorial service couldn't go unfulfilled," he said.

Joining forces with Jed's parents Phillip and Donna Satow, Gibori helped create The Jed Foundation, a New York City-based nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the problem of suicide on America's college campuses.

According to Gibori, approximately 1,100 U.S. college students take their own lives each year. Nobody's sure if that number is rising or falling -- according to Gibori, a steep increase in on-campus suicides has been charted over the past 40 years, but that could simply reflect a more honest reporting of an event that's been too long cloaked in shame.

"Suicide is still an unexplored social taboo in our society today," Gibori said. Breaking that taboo is the key goal of The Jed Foundation and its Web-based help service, www.Ulifeline.org.

Students in trouble who head to the site can get youth-friendly, anonymous mental health information, as well as links to on-campus mental health centers at more than 530 U.S. colleges. "Right now, over 5 million students have access to the program," Gibori said.

The need is real. According to Los Angeles psychologist Michael Peck, a specialist in youth suicide, college can be a dangerous time for troubled young people.

Many are emotionally immature, he said, and while their newfound independence from parents is liberating, it can be scary, too. Alcohol and drugs are readily available, and the pressure to achieve and fit in can be overwhelming, especially at prestige schools.

In fact, "a study I did years ago found that elite colleges have much higher suicide-event rates than small, local community colleges," Peck said. Much of that owes to the fact that students attending smaller, local colleges are also more likely to be living in the relative comfort and safety of the family home.

"Elite colleges also come with higher stress because there's much more pressure on succeeding," he said. "When students aren't succeeding, they feel like they're failing both themselves and their parents, who are often paying a lot of money for these schools."

And Peck pointed to another grim phenomenon: The fact that suicide can be "contagious" on campus. "Students are closely packed together, so a suicide attempt or death may trigger other suicidal behavior by other students," he said. "That's always a problem."

There are warning signs, he said:

  • Apathy. "You'll see a drop-off in school participation, and a falling of grades and class attendance," Peck said.
  • Distance. Friends and family may notice a change in closeness or communication. "This might not always be in terms of frequency," Peck noted. "The student may still call his parents every Sunday like he's supposed to; but instead of the usual conversation, it's just 'Hi Mom, Dad, everything's fine, talk to you later.'"
  • Substance abuse. Friends, especially, should react to any abnormal increase in drinking or drug-taking behavior with concern, the psychologist said.
  • Unexplained gifts. "This actually happens a lot," Peck said. "A student will come to you and say 'I know you're taking chemistry -- here are my books, I won't need them anymore.'" These types of acts are usually a cry for help, he said -- something friends need to be sensitive to.

"Friends are the key ingredient here," Peck said. "Usually, if the student is going to tell anybody that they are at risk, they'll tell a friend." And he believes those closest to at-risk students need to be "understanding, not dismissive," and urge them to head for mental-health counseling.

Parents can also play a key role. "They need to be open to that idea that there can always be problems," he said, and to ease up on the pressure if their child seems to be struggling at school.

If and when problems do surface, parents may need to take decisive action. "They even have to be willing, in extreme circumstances, to bring their child home," Peck said.

Colleges have done much to raise awareness of campus suicide in the past decade or two, Peck said. "Most have a hotline now, a mental-health service, specific rules about partying and hazing," he said.

And yet students like Jed Satow can still fall through the cracks.

"I think the thing people say most often is, 'This can never happen to me, or to my friend,'" Gibori said. "There's that perception out there that people who are depressed are all dressed in black, pierced and tattooed."

But even the most outwardly cheerful, wholesome students can be struggling with hidden demons.

"My two friends in the fraternity who took their lives were probably two of the most popular kids there -- the most liked and the most sociable," Gibori said. "So the key message is that if you don't want it to be you or your friend, get educated on the warning signs, and know that depression is treatable, because everyone is vulnerable."

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PRINCIPAL--THOU SHALL NOT BLOG

Sounds like a typical thing for a Catholic to do... They should be worried about their own priests as sexual predators instead of online lurking sex offenders!!! This is so stupid!

If I were a student at that school I would keep my blog up just as an objection to their idiocy and let them suspend me.

Students can be suspended for a lot of odd reasons these days — wearing "objectionable" T-shirts, cross-dressing for prom, planning elaborate senior pranks — but a principal at a Catholic high school in Sparta, New Jersey, has added another offense to the list: having a blog.

The Reverend Kieran McHugh stunned the 900 students of the private Pope John XXIII Regional High School at a recent assembly when he told them that, effective immediately, they would have to dismantle their personal pages on sites such as MySpace.com and Xanga.com and any other blogs, or face suspension.

McHugh said he was taking the unusual measure to protect students from online sexual predators who may be lurking in cyberspace looking for personal information on children, including their pictures, diaries and gossip, according to a report in New Jersey's The Daily Record newspaper.

Many of the students were reportedly outraged at the school's attempt to regulate their home lives. According to the Record, a majority of them protested the new rule, arguing that it violated their free-speech rights and that the school should have no say on what they do at home.

"I don't see this as censorship," McHugh told the Record. "I believe we are teaching common civility, courtesy and respect." Popular community sites such as Xanga and MySpace got the school administration's attention when it learned that a student had communicated online with someone who lied about their identity, age and where they lived, though McHugh would not elaborate on the specifics of the case.

"If this protects one child from being near-abducted or harassed or preyed upon, I make no apologies for this stance," McHugh said. A diocese spokesperson did not return calls for further comment at press time. MySpace, which would not comment, is the fourth most viewed site on the Internet in the U.S.

Both public and private schools have made efforts in recent years to keep campus computers from accessing certain online content, but McHugh's attempt to regulate home access to social networking sites is reaching across boundaries, according to Kevin Bankston, staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a San-Francisco-based online civil liberties defender. Bankston said he believed the school's real motivation was to suppress negative comments about Pope John posted by students.

"If you look at the policy itself," said Bankston, "it's not preventing children from releasing personal information in a way that might be harmful to them. It's trying to restrict information related to the school and its staff on the Internet, including private communication, like e-mail. So it's a blanket ban on discussing school at all using the most common modern medium for discussion of things."

According to a copy of the school's Internet policy, included in the student handbook, while there is no prohibition on students having personal Web sites, there are rules when it comes to the school. The policy, which a source at the diocese said was five years old, says that because the Web is a "public forum with unrestricted access," the school "restricts permission for the posting of information related to the school, our staff and our students on the Internet."

It states that the posting of any information "in any format" related to the school "on any Web site, bulletin board, chat room, e-mail or other messaging system" that is deemed threatening or impugning to the character of another person is subject to disciplinary action.

According to the Record, some students had posted derogatory comments about the school in their online profiles. The paper quoted one parent, who had never heard of MySpace, praising the policy, saying that it fit with the reason she sent her kids to the private school. "They take the safety of the child into consideration first," said Mary Kaye Nardone, mother of two Pope John students.

A constitutional law expert told the Record that a case could be made that the school added the new restriction after families had already signed a contract with the school for the year. "I think it's a bad idea and I think it's probably illegal — I think the students have some rights," said Rutgers University Professor Frank Askin, director of the Constitutional Litigation Clinic. Askin said he was not aware of any similar case, but added that there is no clear First Amendment violation because the school is a private, not government, entity.

So far, no student has been suspended as a result of the ban, and McHugh said he believes the majority of them have complied with the order.

TONYA HARDING BEAT-DOWN

She looks weird to me...in this picture she sort of looks like Linda Blair in the Exorcist!

Former Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding listens to questions from reporters outside a Clark County District courtroom in Vancouver, Wash., on Jan. 9, 2003. Harding tussled in her home with a man she described as her boyfriend, prompting an emergency call by the figure skater-turned-boxer and an arrest of the man. Tonya Harding tussled in her home with a man she described as her boyfriend, prompting an emergency call by the figure skater-turned-boxer and an arrest of the man.

Christopher Nolan was charged with assault and pleaded not guilty Monday. He told deputies Harding threw him down and bit his finger when he said she had too much to drink on Sunday.

The 27-year-old Nolan was ordered to stay away from Harding and to avoid alcohol. Harding had a small cut over her right eye and an abrasion on her left cheek.

Initially, Harding called 911 and said she was attacked by two masked men who came to her home and assaulted her before she could escape. Nolan said he and Harding were roommates.

The 34-year-old Harding was banned for life from competitive figure skating after her former husband hired a hitman to club rival Nancy Kerrigan with a baton as Kerrigan left the ice during practice at the 1994 U.S. championships in Detroit. The attack prevented Kerrigan from competing, but she recovered to win a silver medal at the 1994 Olympics weeks later. Harding finished out of the running. More recently, Harding has tried her hand at pro boxing to mixed reviews.

MOST NOTABLE KILLERS OF THE 20th CENTURY

Unfortunately, there are almost too many nut cases that could make this list for all the wrong reasons. The following list contains 10 people who left their mark on society in the 20th century, for infamous reasons. This is one list that you should definitely not try to top. Let it also be known that AskMen does not in any shape, form or fashion condone the ruthless activities of any of these individuals. On that pleasant note, enjoy.

10. O.J. Simpson

Yes, we know, 'Not-guilty' in the Criminal Trial, 'Guilty' in the Civil, regardless, this one sure caught the attention of the World: O.J. "what you ain't dead yet?" Simpson was a standout running back, first at the University of Southern California, and then with the Buffalo Bills. But that was not enough. Today, O.J. is neither remembered for his work on the gridiron nor for his spokesperson turn with Hertz, but rather for his knife-wielding skills and his undying search for Nicole and Ron's killers on the golf course.

9. John Gotti

What do John Gotti and Bill Clinton have in common? Bill was a politician who was more of a celebrity; John Gotti was a mob boss who was more like a celebrity. John Gotti can blame his downfall on his flashy side. While past mob bosses got to the top by keeping their mouths shut and minding their own business, Gotti displayed a flash that was almost blasphemous within mob circles.

8. Indonesia's Suharto

When it comes to politicians, they could single-handedly lock up all the spots on this list, but very few guys have left such a criminal mark as Suharto. How many politicians do you know with a $15 billion fortune stashed away?

7. Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolk

They say that Canadians are friendly folk. True, unless you are talking about Paul "rapist /murderer" Bernardo and wife Karla "he twisted my arm your Honor" Homolka. This couple enjoyed torturing, raping and murdering innocent young girls, including Karla's sister and several schoolgirls. Karla sold out, as the prosecution "needed" her testimony to nail Bernardo.

6. Timothy McVeigh

Meet the man who masterminded the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City, which claimed the lives of over 160 innocent people. Some say that the madman pulled this crime on the Waco anniversary in order to object to the Government's anti-right wing movement; gee, I wonder why the government is trying to prevent these things?

5. Unabomber

Have you ever seen Will Ferrell's impression of this manifesto-writing, cabin-loving, razor blade-fearing crazed man, otherwise knows as Theodore Kaczynski? If not, then you should. For years, post office workers were messengers of death, as innocent recipients would receive packages of love from the man in orange (well, after his arrest anyway).

4. Bonnie & Clyde
This duo -- sometimes referred to as the "Bloody Barrows" -- terrorized the country, especially the Southwest, for two years as they killed at least a dozen peace officers. Their reign of terror ranged from Texas to Iowa and back, with regular visits to Oklahoma.

3. Ted Bundy

Thirty to one hundred women were savagely beaten, raped and murdered by this madman in the 1970s. In fact, the exact number of victims is locked within Bundy's sick mind. Executed in 1989, hundreds of people held a vigil outside the prison with "Burn Bundy Burn" signs.

2. Jeffrey Dahmer

It is one thing to be a serial killer, but it is another thing to be a killer that cuts up your victims and makes stew with their bodies. Mmm, mmm, nothing says home cooking like Dahmer's slaughtering. After his arrest in 1991, this sick murderer stayed locked up in jail until 1994, when he was was bludgeoned to death by another convict, who gained access to his work area through a door that was "mysteriously" left unlocked. The guy was so scary that even the hardcore cons did not want him around.

(I lived about 30 minutes away from this guy...I took pictures of his apartment before they tore it down. It was very creepy.)

1. Al Capone

Al Capone took advantage of prohibition laws to build an empire and rule Chicago. While he has more than enough crimes to fill this list, his masterpiece was the infamous St-Valentine's Day Massacre, where he had seven men killed in a warehouse on February 14th, 1929.

(My great-grandmother used to be a waitress in Chicago in the 20's. One of her regular customers was indeed the infamous Al Capone. I wonder if he tipped her well???)

I think this author forgot a VERY infamous serial killer on his list. John Wayne Gacy. Here's a weird story:

Sometime in early November, 1978, my parents went to a business party somewhere in a suburb of Chicago. My dad started playing pool and drinking beers with a fat loud guy that made my dad laugh. My mom, 9 months pregnant, thought the man was creepy and gave her weird feelings, but she didn't know why. One month later, John Wayne Gacy was arrested. When his picture was shown on the TV my parents flipped out!!! What a story! I hung out, drank beer, and played pool with a serial killer.

John Wayne Gacy's final words before his execution:

"A clown can get away with murder. The only thing they can get me for is running a funeral parlor without a license. Kiss my ass!"

1. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (on MY own serial killer list)

On Friday, December 22, 1978, Gacy finally confessed to police that he killed at least thirty people and buried most of the remains of the victims beneath the crawl space of his house.

According to the book Killer Clown: The John Wayne Gacy Murders by Sullivan an
d Maiken, Gacy said that, "his first killing took place in January, 1972, and the second in January, 1974, about a year and a half after his marriage."

He further confessed that he would lure his victims into being handcuffed and then he would sexually assault them. To muffle the
screams of his victims, he would stuff a sock or underwear into their mouths and kill them by pulling a rope or board against their throats, as he raped them.

Gacy admitted to sometimes keeping the dead bodies under his bed or in the attic for several hours before eventually burying them in the crawl space.

On the first day that the police began their digging, they found two bodies. One of the bodies was that of John Butkovich who was buried under the garage. The other body was the one found in the crawl space. As the days passed, the body count grew higher.

Some of the victims were found with their underwear still lodged deep in their throats.

Other victims were buried so close together that police believed they were probably killed or buried at the same time. Gacy did confirm to police that he had on several occasions killed more than one person in a day. However, the reason he gave for them being buried so close together was that he was running out of room and needed to conserve space.

On the 28th of December, police had removed a total of twenty-seven bodies from Gacy's house. There was also another body found weeks earlier, yet it was not in the crawl space. The naked corpse of Frank Wayne "Dale" Landingin was found in the Des Plaines River. At the time of the discovery police were not yet aware of Gacy's horrible crimes and the case was still under investigation. But, investigators found Landingin's driver's license in Gacy's home and connected him to the young man's murder.

Landingin was not the only one of Gacy's victims to be found in the river. Also, on December 28th, police removed from the Des Plaines River the body of James "Mojo" Mazzara, who still had his underwear lodged in his throat. The coroner said that the underwear stuffed down the victim's throat had caused Mazzara to suffocate.

Gacy told police that the reason he disposed of the bodies in the river was because he ran out of room in his crawl space and because he had been experiencing back problems from digging the graves. Mazzara was the twenty-ninth victim of Gacy's to be found, yet it would not be the last.

By the end of February, police were still digging up Gacy's property. They had already gutted the house and were unable to find anymore bodies in the crawl space. It had taken investigators longer than expected to resume the search due to bad winter storms that froze the ground and the long process of obtaining proper search warrants.

However, they believed there were still more bodies to be found and they were right. While workmen were breaking up the concrete of Gacy's patio, they came across another horrific discovery. They found the body of a man still in good condition preserved in the concrete. The man wore a pair of blue jeans shorts and a wedding ring.

Gacy's victims no longer included just young boys or suspected homosexuals, but now also married men. The following week another body was discovered. The thirty-first body to be found linked to Gacy was in the Illinois River. Investigators were able to discover the identity of the young man by a "Tim Lee" tattoo on one of his arms. A friend of the victim's father had recognized the "Tim Lee" tattoo while reading a newspaper story about the discovery of a body in the river. The victim's name was Timothy O'Rourke, who was said to be such a fan of Bruce Lee's that he took the Kung Fu master's last name and added it to his own name in his tattoo. It is possible that Gacy had become acquainted with the young man in one of the gay bars in New Town.

Yet, another body was found on Gacy's property around the time O'Rourke was discovered and pulled from the river. The body was located beneath the recreation room of Gacy's house. It would be the last body to be found on Gacy's property.

Soon after the discovery, the house was destroyed and reduced to rubble. Unfortunately, among the thirty-two bodies that were discovered that of Robert Piest was still unaccounted for. Piest was still missing. Finally in April 1979, the remains of Robert Piest were discovered in the Illinois River. His body had supposedly been lodged somewhere along the river making it difficult to find his body. However, strong winds must have dislodged the corpse and carried it to the locks at Dresden Dam where it was eventually discovered. Autopsy reports on Piest determined that he had suffocated from paper towels being lodged down his throat.

FUNNY VIDEO OF THE DAY

TOO FUNNY! Watch the very end...he totally slams his drink like a drunken college kid.

NO BOMB THREAT--JUST A TOY

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - San Diego airport's commuter terminal was evacuated on Tuesday after baggage screeners found what initially appeared to be bomb components but turned out to be a toy, security officials said.

Earlier in the morning two Los Angeles area airports received bomb threats, although no explosives were found, and all three airports were operating normally by mid-morning.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman said screeners at San Diego International Airport at around 7:45 a.m. (10:45 a.m. EDT) found what appeared to be components of an explosive and called the bomb squad. Police found a toy and what they called "some organic material," and the terminal was reopened at about 9:15 a.m. (12:15 p.m. EDT), a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman added.

Two bomb threats were called at about 3 a.m. (6 a.m EDT) to Long Beach and Orange County's John Wayne airport, both in the Los Angeles area, airport spokespeople said. Neither search found explosives, and John Wayne opened without delays.

U.S. MILITARY DEATH TOLL TOPS 2,000

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The war in Iraq saw two milestones Tuesday that reflect the country's path toward democracy and its human toll as officials said the referendum on a draft constitution passed and the number of U.S. military deaths reached 2,000.

CNN's count of U.S. fatalities reflects reports from military sources and includes deaths in Iraq, Kuwait and other units assigned to the Iraq campaign.
The U.S. military does not publish an up-to-date running tally of deaths.
I WONDER WHY THAT IS???

Among the latest casualties, an American soldier was killed Saturday by a roadside bomb, and a roadside blast killed two Marines in combat Friday near Amariya in the western Anbar province, according to the U.S. military.

President Bush, speaking to military spouses at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, said the best way to honor the dead would be to complete the mission in Iraq. "We've lost some of our nation's finest men and women in the war on terror," Bush said. "Each of these men and women left grieving families and left loved ones back home. Each of these patriots left a legacy that allowed generations of their fellow Americans to enjoy the blessings of liberty."

Since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, more than 15,000 American service members have been wounded in the conflict, according to the Defense Department.

According to CNN's tally, 2,194 coalition troops have died in the war.

MARRIED WOMEN FATTER?

See! Another reason not to get married!!!

Women be warned, men can be bad for you!

According to a UK obesity expert when women move in with their man they very often put on weight as a result. Obesity expert, Haslam, says eating with a partner becomes a social event, where women often eat larger portions and indulge in richer foods and wines and more extravagant food. When those factors are combined with taking the contraceptive pill or having babies, a woman's waistline can severely suffer, says Haslam.

Dr. Haslam says research shows women tend to gain weight once they cohabit and begin to share meals with men who intrinsically have higher energy needs and therefore appetites. The weekly shopping list may change from the basic fruit and veg to include indulgent treats, and couples may go out to restaurants for meals more often.
  • Women also may do less exercise when they are in a relationship, skipping a trip to the gym to spend quality time with their partner.
  • The contraceptive pill, which is taken by millions of women, has been associated with a slight weight gain among some users, on average 4lb in the first three months.
  • Repeated pregnancies can also lead to weight gain.
  • Changes in society's attitude also means women may be less physically active than their great-grandmothers were, doing less housework thanks to technology, and getting partners to share the load or paying others to do it for them.

In the past studies have shown that married couples gain weight while those who divorce lose weight. Dr. Haslam does fortunately stress that it is important not to generalize and that being in a relationship has numerous positive influences and gains too.
He says however it is important for individuals to look at their own lifestyles and make healthy changes if they need to, as obesity has been shown to decrease life expectancy by seven years at the age of 40.

The study is published in The Lancet medical journal. http://www.thelancet.com

MORE BREAKING NEWS: BOMB COMPONENTS FOUND AT SAN DIEGO AIRPORT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Baggage screeners found bomb components in a carry-on piece of luggage at San Diego International Airport on Tuesday and cleared the area to investigate, Department of Homeland Security Spokesmen said.

A department spokesman said the screeners found "all components of an IED" (improvised explosive device) in a piece of luggage at around 7:45 a.m. (10:45 a.m. EDT). They then evacuated the commuter terminal of the airport and bomb specialists began to investigate, the spokesman said.

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Nico Melendez said an employee noticed a "suspicious item" in a piece of luggage as it was going through the X-ray machine.

The Homeland Security spokesman said officials were investigating to see if there was any link between the discovery in San Diego and bomb threats at two Los Angeles-area airports.

Searches at the Long Beach airport and a separate threat at nearby Orange County's John Wayne airport were resolved with no bombs found.

TEEN SUICIDES--NOT ALWAYS LINKED TO DEPRESSION

Teen Suicide--Warning Signs

MONDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Depression isn't the only mental disorder that mental-health professionals need to watch for to prevent youth suicides.

That recommendation is based on a World Health Organization study that looked at which mental disorders may be linked to suicide in young people. Researchers from New Zealand and Switzerland reviewed 894 cases of youth suicides worldwide, and found the majority (89 percent) of the young people in these suicides had at least one diagnosis of a mental disorder.

  • Mood disorders were the most common (42%)
      • Mood disorders include major and minor depression, bipolar disorder, hypomania, dysthymia and mania
  • Substance abuse-related disorders (40%)
      • Substance-related disorders include alcohol dependency/abuse and drug abuse.
  • Disruptive disorders (20%)
      • Disruptive disorders include attention-deficit disorder, conduct disorder, identity disorder and oppositional disorder.

The study authors suggested that comprehensive suicide-prevention strategies for young people should target mental disorders as a whole, and not focus solely on depression.

Along with mental disorders, other factors have to be taken into account, such as a person's predisposition, social and environmental conditions, culture and psychosocial risk factors, the researchers said.

The study appears in the October issue of the
American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. More information The U.S. Center for Mental Health Services outlines suicide warning signs.

MORE PEDOPHILES AND SEX OFFENDERS TO WORRY ABOUT

Why do women and girls have to worry about their safety at all times in society today? Why are there so many crimes against females by sex offenders and pedophiles?

These types of people need to be in PRISON. Not jail, but PRISON. It's pretty pathetic that a rapist gets less jail/prison time than someone charged with drug possession!!!

I am thinking about buying a non-lethal protection device for myself...you can't trust ANYONE anymore.

Indianapolis, Indiana
The Indychannel.com

A teenager told police that a man chased her from a bus stop to her home after she refused to get into his car Monday morning.

The 15-year-old said she was waiting for a school bus near the intersection of East and Lincoln streets when a man, driving what appeared to be an older-model police car, asked her to approach the vehicle shortly after 8 a.m.

The girl said, "I was suspecting he was a police officer, I walked up to the car and he said, 'Well, you're looking pretty sexy today,' " The man asked if he could get to know her and then said she could make some money if she entered the car. T
he girl ran, and the man chased her on foot until she arrived at her home nearly four blocks away. "When he watched me come into the house, he ran."

Based on the man's comments to the girl, investigators are concerned that the man "could be a pedophile and out to hurt these kids in the area," Indianapolis police Officer Paul Humphrey said. Police said they are investigating the incident.

Authorities said the man was described as being a white man in his late 30s to early 40s, driving what could be an early 1990s gray or silver Chevrolet Caprice that once served as a police cruiser.

BREAKING NEWS: BOMB THREATS

BOMB THREATS HIT 2 LOS ANGELES AREA AIRPORTS

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two Los Angeles-area airports received bomb threats early on Tuesday morning but searches turned up no explosives. A bomb threat delayed flights at the Long Beach airport and a separate threat at nearby John Wayne Airport was resolved before flights were due to begin, officials said.

Long Beach airport police found no bomb following a search and flights were due to resume during the morning. Orange County's John Wayne airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said it was unclear if the two threats were related. She said her airport received a "non-specific" threat around 3 a.m. (1000 EDT), but the airport opened on time after a police search found no bomb.

A threat was called in to the Long Beach Airport six minutes later, according to a Long Beach Police Department spokesman. The threat was treated as "non-specific" and "non-credible" a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said, who added that eight flights had been affected.

Officials gave no further details on the threats.

FAMOUS CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER ROSA PARKS DIES AT 92

I have been a huge African-American history buff since I was 11 and saw the epic movie, "Roots", adapted from author, Alex Haley.

I immediately learned what the 'real world' was like for Black people everywhere in America. I never thought it was fair, and I have a great respect for Black Americans because their ancestors are the ones that truly built America.

Rosa Parks was probably the most influential women during the Civil Rights Movement. If it weren't for Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., would have never organized and started the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which awarded him the Nobel Prize.

Where would Black Americans be today without Rosa Park's courage?

A Montgomery (Ala.) Sheriff's Department booking photo of Rosa Parks taken Feb 22, 1956, is shown Friday, July 23, 2004, in Montgomery, Ala. Parks, whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man sparked the modern civil rights movement. (AP Photo/Montgomery County Sheriff's office)

DETROIT - Nearly 50 years ago, Rosa Parks made a simple decision that sparked a revolution. When a white man demanded she give up her sea
t on a Montgomery, Ala., bus, the then 42-year-old seamstress said no.

At the time, she couldn't have known it would secure her a revered place in American history. But her one small act of defiance galvanized a generation of activists, including a young Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., and earned her the title "mother of the civil rights movement."

Mrs. Parks died Monday evening at her home of natural causes, with close friends by her side, said Gregory Reed, an attorney who represented her for the past 15 years. She was 92. Monique Reynolds, 37, a native of Montgomery, Ala., called Mrs. Parks an inspiration who had lived to see the changes brought about by the civil rights movement. "Martin Luther King never saw this, Malcolm X never saw this," said Reynolds, who now lives in Detroit. "She was able to see this and enjoy it."

In 1955, Jim Crow laws in place since the post-Civil War Reconstruction required separation of the races in buses, restaurants and public accommodations throughout the South, while legally sanctioned racial discrimination kept blacks out of many jobs and neighborhoods in the North.

Mrs. Parks, an active member of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was riding on a city bus Dec. 1, 1955, when a white man demanded her seat. She refused, despite rules requiring blacks to yield their seats to whites. Two black Montgomery women had been arrested earlier that year on the same charge, but Mrs. Parks was jailed. She also was fined $14.

Speaking in 1992, Mrs. Parks said history too often maintains "that my feet were hurting and I didn't know why I refused to stand up when they told me. But the real reason of my not standing up was I felt that I had a right to be treated as any other passenger. We had endured that kind of treatment for too long."

Her arrest triggered a 381-day boycott of the bus system organized by a then little-known Baptist minister, the Rev. King, who later earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his work. "At the time I was arrested I had no idea it would turn into this," she said 30 years later. "It was just a day like any other day. The only thing that made it significant was that the masses of the people joined in."

The Montgomery bus boycott, which came one year after the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark declaration that separate schools for blacks and whites were "inherently unequal," marked the start of the modern civil rights movement.

"Everybody wanted to explain Rosa Parks and wanted to teach Rosa Parks, but Rosa Parks wasn't very interested in that," he said. "She wanted them to understand the government and to understand their rights and the Constitution that people are still trying to perfect today."

The Montgomery bus boycott, which came one year after
the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark declaration that separate schools for blacks and whites were "inherently unequal," marked the start of the modern civil rights movement. The movement culminated in the 1964 federal Civil Rights Act, which banned racial discrimination in public accommodations.

After taking her public stand for civil rights, Mrs. Parks had trouble finding work in
Alabama. Amid threats and harassment, she and her husband, Raymond, moved to Detroit in 1957. She worked as an aide in Conyers' Detroit office from 1965 until retiring Sept. 30, 1988.

"Rosa Parks: My Story," was published in February 1992. In 1994,
"Quiet Strength: The Faith, the Hope and the Heart of a Woman Who Changed a Nation," and in 1996 a collection of letters called "Dear Mrs. Parks: A Dialogue With Today's Youth."

She was among the civil rights leaders who addressed the Million Man March in October 1995.

  • In 1996, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, awarded to civilians making outstanding contributions to American life.
  • In 1999, she was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest civilian honor.
  • Mrs. Parks was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor
  • In 1999, Mrs. Parks received a NAACP Image Award for her appearance on CBS' "Touched by an Angel."

Her later years were not without difficult moments. In 1994, her home was invaded by a 28-year-old man who beat her and took $53. She was treated at a hospital and released. The man, Joseph Skipper, pleaded guilty, blaming the crime on his drug problem.

In 2002, her landlord threatened to evict her from her high-rise apartment in downtown Detroit after her caregivers missed rental payments. Riverfront Associates decided in October 2004 to let her live there rent-free permanently.

In 1988, Mrs. Parks said she worried that black young people took legal equality for granted. Older blacks, she said "have tried to shield young people from what we have suffered. And in so doing, we seem to have a more complacent attitude. "We must double and redouble our efforts to try to say to our youth, to try to give them an inspiration, an incentive and the will to study our heritage and to know what it means to be black in America today."

"I am leaving this legacy to all of you ... to bring peace, justice, equality, love and a fulfillment of what our lives should be. Without vision, the people will perish, and without courage and inspiration, dreams will die — the dream of freedom and peace."

TAYLOR BEHL: BEN FAWLEY CLAIMS HE CHOKED TAYLOR WHILE HAVING SEX

A Judge has placed a Gag Order on witnesses in Behl case according to the Washington Post. This would prohibit any witnesses from publicly discussing their testimony in front of the grand jury that is investigating the death of Taylor Behl.

A Richmond judge has signed a gag order that bars witnesses from publicly discussing any testimony they give to a special grand jury investigating the death of college student Taylor Marie Behl, officials said yesterday. The order was signed Monday by the judge presiding over the multi-jurisdictional grand jury, which is expected to convene again this morning in Richmond Circuit Court.

Grand jury witnesses are generally allowed to discuss their testimony if they wish to. Police chief, Rodney D. Monroe, requested the a gag order after he became concerned when information about the police investigation was leaked to the media last week, ‘Police Told Death an Accident, Lawyer Says’.

Benjamin Fawley is reported to have told police that Taylor Behl died accidentally while they were having a sexual encounter, according to an attorney representing Behl’s mother.

Taylor Behl’s mother Janet Pelasara was quick to respond to such statements. “Let’s be clear — Ben Fawley murdered my daughter,” Janet Pelasara said during a hastily arranged news conference outside her attorney’s McLean office. “His claim that it was accidental is just one more perversion of the truth in his ever-changing web of lies.”

Fawley told investigators that he had consensual sex with Behl in her car parked near a beach in rural Mathews County, Va., the night of Sept. 5 and that he accidentally choked her. Fawley panicked after Behl died and dumped her body in a ravine.

Pelasara called Fawley “a big, fat liar” and said she was speaking for the 17-year-old daughter she buried Friday. The notion that Behl and Fawley were lovers is wrong, Pelasara said. Behl had sex with Fawley once in April and decided she did not want an intimate relationship with him, her mother said. "She did it once out of curiosity and then didn't want anything to do with him," according to Pelasara, who said she learned about her daughter's April encounter with Fawley through conversations with Behl's closest friends.

“He had a dark side, and Taylor wasn’t a dark side kind of girl.” “It is apparent that my daughter died a violent and unspeakable death at the hands of Ben Fawley that night and was not a willing participant."

Fawley has a history of violence toward girlfriends. He has a very significant past, and has a violent nature. He choked previous girlfriends. Fawley is in jail on unrelated firearms and child pornography charges.

Behl disappeared on Labor Day, two weeks after starting at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Her body was discovered nearly two weeks ago in Mathews County, about 90 miles from the college. An autopsy has been performed, but the cause of her death has not been determined.

How long do autopsy results take in Virginia? How can they not know the cause of death by now?

About 400 people, many of them Behl's childhood friends but some strangers who had been following the news coverage, packed a Vienna church for her funeral Friday.

DUMB CRIMINAL--OR NOT? YOU DECIDE...

Drugs in popcorn bag lead to arrest

What justification did that cop have to look inside the popcorn bag? How could he have had a 'reasonable suspicion'? Weed smells, cocaine doesn't. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know much about "reasonable search and seizure", but I'm going to look into it. Don't get me wrong...I'm not condoning this guy...I just don't trust cops.

MARION, Ind. -- Police arrested a Kokomo man after they say they found cocaine in a bag of microwave popcorn in his car.

Steve White, 33, was preliminary charged with possession of cocaine with intent to deliver. He was being held in the Grant County Jail Sunday evening on $50,000 bond.

Police said they pulled over White's vehicle when looking to serve an arrest warrant to someone else. (Oh, how convenient...)

They found that White's driver's license was suspended, and then checked a bag of microwave popcorn that police said White had given to a female passenger just before stopping. They found 13 grams of cocaine, according to a police report. The cocaine has a street value of $1,300 to $1,600, according the report.

NICOLE SPEAKS OUT...WHOO HOO...BIG NEWS STORY

I have no idea why I am posting this...it's such nonsense and I can't stand either of them. Why are they in the media so much? They are both losers and spoiled wannabes!

So, I guess I'm posting this due to that "guilty pleasure" thing I have going on.

Nicole Richie has broken her silence...ooh, chilling...

In a new interview with Jane magazine, the Simple Life star spoke up about her rift with former BFF (Best Friend Forever) Paris Hilton, saying that no reconciliation is in sight.

Richie said she and Hilton "really haven't been friends in probably about two years," but declined to say what caused the falling out between the ex-confidantes. "I know that Paris loves to talk about it and that stuff, but that's just not my style," Richie told Jane. As for whether she thought she and Hilton would ever make up, she replied, "No, not at this point."

Last April, Hilton released a statement attributing the split to Richie, but failing to provide specifics. "I will not go into the details of what happened," Hilton said. "All I will say is that Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I am ever going to say about it."

Rumor has it that the cause of the 'fight' was when Nicky Hilton had people over to watch a tape of Paris hosting Saturday Night Live. Nicole secretly switched tapes and put in Paris's infamous sex tape. She hit play and walked away, leaving Paris humiliated and peeved enough to end her relationship with Richie.

Despite the bad blood between the two socialites, both remain under contract for the fourth season of their reality series, The Simple Life. Though Fox decided earlier this month to drop the series from its schedule, Hilton said last week that production plans remained in place. "We're shooting Nov. 1," the heiress told the Associated Press. "All the networks are fighting over it."

While Hilton remained unshakably optimistic about the future of the series, Richie seemed less certain of what her Simple Life role would consist of this time around. "Nobody knows what the concept is right now--we're just signed on to do it," she said.

In addition to finally opening up about the demise of her friendship, Richie addressed another much talked-about topic--her weight. The formerly curvy celebutante denied rumors that her dramatic weight loss is due to an eating disorder. "Nothing people say really bothers me, but that bothers me because I wouldnt want somebody younger than me, someone who looks up to me, to believe it," Richie said.

HELLO? She looks like a starved "Ally McBeal" living in a concentration camp!

NICOLE BEFORE AND AFTER

Hello? Plastic surgery?
Check out those cheek bones and thinner nose.
Looks like she had her teeth capped, too.

She also denied father Lionel Richie's public suggestion that stress over her upcoming nuptials to fiance DJ AM (aka Adam Goldstein) caused the pounds to melt away. "I don't know why [my dad] said that...I think what he meant to say is, like, if you're doing a million things, obviously you eat less," she said.

No wonder why Paris and Courtney Love are such good friends. They are both hoes and psychos!
