Friends and family are saying goodbye to Julie Popovich. The 18-year-old Ohio State University student disappeared August 11 and her body was later found near Hoover Reservoir.

Popovich, 20, was last seen leaving Ledo's Lounge, located at 2608 North High Street, on Aug. 11. Popovich was last seen leaving the Ohio State campus-area bar with an unidentified man. The initial missing persons case was recently turned over to homicide investigators, NBC 4 reported."When we started out, we were considering this an involuntary missing (persons case), based on some leads we developed," said Sgt. Greg Estep of the Columbus missing persons unit. "We are now moving that up to what we consider foul play is a possibility."Police confirmed to NBC 4 that Popovich's boyfriend was questioned and has been cooperative in the case. He is not considered a suspect, police said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police detectives told NBC 4 Friday that the human remains found near Hoover Dam belong to a 20-year-old missing Reynoldsburg woman. Investigators say the remains belong to 20-year-old Julie Popovich, who disappeared after leaving a campus-area bar three weeks ago.

The remains were discovered by a mowing crew along Smothers Road, but were not removed from the scene until Friday afternoon. Positive dental identification was made Friday evening.

Popovich's family issued a brief statement: "The family is deeply saddened. We are planning a service for Julie on Friday of next week."

Police said there are no suspects at this time.

I am living in Columbus, and am an OSU Grad student - I share your sentiment. Even more shocking is the fact that at OSU, where, according to the latest crime statistics (available online at OSU.EDU): sexually aggravated felonys on campus have risen over the last three years (3,7,9), the security division has had no comment for the student body. Neither has the Dean.

But the U did seem to have time to write an apology letter for recent unsportmanslike behavior from OSU fans toward their Texas rivals, as well as making a speech to students in a public appeal to behave in the future.

I guess football is more important than murder. I was appalled.

Note: I have yet to get a response to my email asking what has been done to remedy this alarming statistic.

Please alert all your female friends and family there is now a new beta site in development online at www.mapsexoffenders.com where you can plug in your address and stay informed about where they live in your area.

This is another sad example of why discussions about safety on college campuses should be not be held so infrequently.

My heart goes out to her family and friends.
