INDIANAPOLIS = CHEAP GAS???

What you talkin' bout Willis??? Cheap Gas?! Start Hoarding!

For the first time in several months, gas prices have dipped below $2 a gallon for regular unleaded at some stations in central Indiana.Some customers never envisioned a day that they would say prices at $2 a gallon are "cheap," but after prices above $3 a gallon became common post-Katrina, "cheap" may be the most sensible way to describe current prices.

Regular unleaded gas at a Marathon station at 30th Street and Shadeland Avenue in Indianapolis was $1.96 a gallon Friday. Gary Smith thought his ears were deceiving him when he heard the news about prices under $2 a gallon. At midday Friday, vehicles were lined up, creating a traffic jam near the station, RTV6's Eric Weisfeld reported. "I've been in line for about 15 minutes or so. I remember about two months ago it was $3.20," Smith said. "This is really a blessing."

The Marathon station and others in the area were engaging in a gas war. Station manager Amjad Salhab said it feels good to offer welcomed news in challenging economic times."Everything's going up and they (vendors) blame it on the gas," Salhab said. "The candy is raised in its cost -- the chips, everybody. We're trying to keep that from being an excuse for everything going up."

Smith may be the Marathon station's best salesman, now that the prices have dipped. He was telling everyone he knew about the bargain. Analysts said gas prices should stay at the same level or, perhaps, even go lower over the next few weeks.

Don't get TOO comfy, people...

However, an increase in heating fuel prices could force gas prices to rise again.
