KATRINA REFUGEES OVERSTAY THEIR WELCOME

Two weekends ago, FEMA and the City of Austin, along with the Texas Workforce Commission setup a job training/hiring/interview/job fair for all the Katrina FEMA evacuees in the Austin area to be held at the ACC campus on Webberville Road in East Austin. Several of the evacuees said they had no transportation to get from the apartment complexes.

So the city of Austin/FEMA/TWC set up transportation for each of them to ensure they would be able to partake of the benefit of job searching. The transportation consisted of nine buses and vans, to run from four locations in Round Rock, and five locations in Austin, in continuing shuttles back and forth to the campus to ensure that the hundreds of people looking for jobs would be transported in comfort. The vehicles were brought to their residences; drivers knocked on the doors; and every effort was made.

At the end of the day, the nine vans and buses transported a total of one person. At the end of the day, none of the Katrina Evacuees applied for any of the jobs.

One person took the bus. None of the Katrina Evacuees applied for any of the jobs. - NONE.

The bill to FEMA was $7800.

And yet they still get on TV claiming that the United States Government "OWES THEM", I say we don't owe them anything and if anything, they OWE us - the Tax Payers that are "WORKING PEOPLE", they owe what they have been mooching off of the Tax Payers for almost a year now. It is obvious that they don't intend to work as long as they can sponge off of the system.

It is time to cut them loose and tell them the free ride is over!

For what it's worth: What's your source for this story? Was it in the Austin papers? On TV? How can you post this without accreditation and hope to be taken seriously?

A retraction is in order:

This is a racist post that uses the facts to paint an inaccurate picture. Do your research before you post urban legends.

Where did you get this info from?

I completely agree with you!! Not only have they been taking advandage of the of what FEMA and the local cities have provided for them, but just in Houston alone, they have increased the crime rate. Most of thefts, murders, or rapes, have been linked to a New Orleans evacue. It is horrifiying to keep hearing stories from friends and family on how they have been affected with the invation of all refugees. They roam the streets day or night, they approach in an uncomfortable manner. One is not safe anymore going out in plain daylight.

What was owed to these victims was a quick response to one of the worst tragedies in American history. I'm not making excusses for anyone who doesn't want to work, but you need to put yourself in there shoes mentally and emotionally. Have you ever been impoverished, many of these people were already victims of there surroundings In New Orleans then they went through a7 DAYS (at the least)of PURE and utter torture and mistreatment at the hands of our Government. Now you want them, with no counseling or guidance of how to be self suffient or how to process what they went through and losing the little bit they have to just start over with no issues. That's not realistic we're talking about HUMAN BEINGS who spirits were broken as the government sent a strong message that BLACK skin and poor people are not important enough for immediate government response. I've been homeless before and have lost everything at one time in my life and I personally know what that does to you mentally and emotionally. Although I'm doing VERY well now, I now and saw in my journey of hard times EVERYONE is not as strong as me (in fact the average person isn't). Some people need guidance, some need leadership, some need to be taught what to do and some people just don't give a damn and give up. This is a proven fact there are climbers campers and under achievers in life so now that we see it in the masses because the lack of government response we dog these poor people that have lived through something you couldn't probably survive (and stay in your right mind). Have a heart lady yeah they may lack motivation, so lets find a way to motivate the ones that need a push and stop with the negative. Your taxes won't decrease a half a cent if these people did get jobs there's a BILLION dollar war going on that's sucking our country dry not ignorant people who went through a serious tragedy they need your help not ridicule.

a friend of mine just opened a business in the Louisiana area and no one has applied from Katrina and yet they have had their free money extended so why apply and work?

This is a very watered down version of the first comment I was trying to post-the dam public library monitors what I write, so they didn't like it and deleted it as I was writing.

Very strong words written by the author, but evidently author was not paying attention. The fact that people did not show up for the free ride was a message being sent. They are tired of dam people making money off of their suffering. The aurhor wrote"One person took the bus. None of the Katrina Evacuees applied for any of the jobs. - NONE." Then the author wrote a sentence by itself to ensure that everybody saw that the REFUGEES were ungrateful and that they had cost a lot of money.

"The bill to FEMA was $7800."

Who lost money? who made money? FEMA made their money reguardless. The reason the REFUGEES didn't show is because they already knew that it would be a waste of time and that only the people who were making money would continue to make money and they would go back home with nothing. So they figured why waste their time.

In the book "Burden of Race" which is the recordings of some of the elite socialites of the Civil War
era or prior to the Civil War in the 1700's and 1800's wrote:

"Paragraph from the book"The Burden of Race"states, "What shall be done with the free Negroes?" was the rhetorical question Southern philosopher George Fitzhugh posed himself. He replied in all seriousness, that they should be re-enslave themselves. Freedom was a condition utterly detrimental tothe welfare of Negroes, Fitzhugh believed-a state antithetical to their beings: "How cruel and unwise.....not to extend the blessings of slavery to the free Negroes,"he wrote. The founders of the American Colonization Society asked the same question, and concluded there was no hope for racial harmonyor advancement in America: "The black man's case is well nigh hopelin (in) this country." Colonizationists advocated a return to Africa. Unfortunately for these points of view, neither solution seemed especially palatable to Negroes.

Yet American society was unable to offer any better answeres to Fitzhugh's query. Advocates of the simplest and yet most complex answer-full-equality-represented an infinitesimal portion of the general population. Justice Taney's position, in the Dred Scott decision, found ample evidence in the history of colonial and Revolutionary America an in the laws of all the states to warrent the conclusion that free Negroes had never been treated as American citizens anywhere in the nation and therefore he denied theem any right to citizenship. Thedecision simply=formalized and clarified a fact of Americanlive on the eve of the Civil War just under half a millionfound themselves in this anomalous position-STRANGERS IN THE LAND OF THEIR BIRTH." (57-58)

The most profound and saddest statement was the part of the statement, "STRANGERS IN THE LAND OF THEIR BIRTH"; that statement was written in a book that was discussing issues from 1773,etc..
The fact that the author, in 2006 refers to the people in Hurricane Katraina as REFUGEES, suggest that the United States of America has not moved forward at all; just giving the illusion of equality. For the author to call them Refugees was to call them "STRANGERS IN THE LAND OF THEIR BIRTH:. If all the REFUGEES had been Caucasions, bet you they would have been called everything else; but the Caucasions would not have been call "REFUGEES".

And as a last point, bet you that the REFUGEES already knew how the process was going to go, because before Katrina they had already did the dam job thing (did you know that same people are punished if the look for a job or try to get out of a certain economic category?); of looking daily for employment, only to end up in the dam food stamp line.

To me the author seems to be in a position of not understanding. After going through something like Katrina, most people would not want to go through the nicities to make other people feel good. What the author doesn't understand is that the REFUGEES did NOT go to elaborate illusionary set up of trying to help them by giving them jobs so someone could look good in the community because they knew that it was just another type of setup to make money off of them.

They decided to send a message as best they could; being that they are not ALLOWED access to the normal channels of communication/media, such as radio, television and newspaper. They were saying that they are not REFUGEES, and that they are tired of people using their daily, longterm and short term suffering to make money.

Evidently the author did not understand, but those who know understand, the REFUGEES were using the situation to send a message that they are tired of people making money off of their suffering. If they had gone to the work fair, it would have looked like those in charge had did a good thing and most people would think that most of them would have gotten a job. which would have been illusionary.

The same system was used on the Indians; somebody made money off of them; but they never progressed in the mainstream (Caucasion)American society.

I normally wouldn't allow presidential comments in this section but I will because I don't like Obama myself. NOT because he is black, but I don't think he is qualified or experienced enough to lead the most powerful nation in the world. I feel that even he is half white, I believe he is racist against white people.

Don't forget what he said about his white grandmother a few weeks ago, "Typical white person"

Do I need to say more?

No suprise to me. I live in New Orleans, the inner city, not the suburbs. We have THOUSANDS of migrant hispanic workers here because the 'unemployed' in our city are too f-ing lazy to take a job. I bust my a** at work to find able-bodied people drinking booze on their stoops 24/7. I must be the fool for having a job and earning a living. I am tired of people making excuses for the people because they are poor and black. It's not like they are deaf and blind.
