WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University announced plans to update the warning signs at all the campus' high-voltage areas, including the one where the body of a freshman who was fatally shocked was found Monday.
The "Too Little Too LATE Remedy"
The university will bring up the signs on older campus buildings to the newest standards for high-voltage facilities, school spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg said Wednesday. Buildings constructed or renovated after 1981 are required to post signs on the doors of rooms containing more than 600 volts of electricity, according to federal safety codes. Owen Hall, the dormitory where the body of 19-year-old Wade Steffey was found, was built in 1957.
Norberg said crews would inspect about 160 buildings on campus. Three buildings that have outdoor access to utility areas, including Owen Hall, will be the first to receive new signs, she said. (Source)
According to Wade Steffey’s father there were NO signs on the doors warning persons of high voltage and other dangers. Sounds like Purdue is backtracking…trying to right the wrong. It’s too late. Wade is gone. I hope Purdue takes the necessary steps to compensate this family for the loss of their young promising brilliant son.
