MARRIED WOMEN FATTER?

See! Another reason not to get married!!!

Women be warned, men can be bad for you!

According to a UK obesity expert when women move in with their man they very often put on weight as a result. Obesity expert, Haslam, says eating with a partner becomes a social event, where women often eat larger portions and indulge in richer foods and wines and more extravagant food. When those factors are combined with taking the contraceptive pill or having babies, a woman's waistline can severely suffer, says Haslam.

Dr. Haslam says research shows women tend to gain weight once they cohabit and begin to share meals with men who intrinsically have higher energy needs and therefore appetites. The weekly shopping list may change from the basic fruit and veg to include indulgent treats, and couples may go out to restaurants for meals more often.
  • Women also may do less exercise when they are in a relationship, skipping a trip to the gym to spend quality time with their partner.
  • The contraceptive pill, which is taken by millions of women, has been associated with a slight weight gain among some users, on average 4lb in the first three months.
  • Repeated pregnancies can also lead to weight gain.
  • Changes in society's attitude also means women may be less physically active than their great-grandmothers were, doing less housework thanks to technology, and getting partners to share the load or paying others to do it for them.

In the past studies have shown that married couples gain weight while those who divorce lose weight. Dr. Haslam does fortunately stress that it is important not to generalize and that being in a relationship has numerous positive influences and gains too.
He says however it is important for individuals to look at their own lifestyles and make healthy changes if they need to, as obesity has been shown to decrease life expectancy by seven years at the age of 40.

The study is published in The Lancet medical journal. http://www.thelancet.com

Don't forget, married men also gain weight in marriage. The following article makes it sound like Jack Sprat and his wife are the archetype couple.

"Obese women were happier with their marriages than other women, whereas obese men had more marital problems than other men. Men who gained weight were more likely to report marital problems than men who lost weight, while women who gained weight were more likely to be happy compared with those who lost weight," the authors reported in the Journal of Family Issues (Vol. 16, November 1995).

"One theory about why obese women were happier with their marriages is related to recognizing their decreased value in the marriage market in a society that stigmatizes obesity. As a result, obese women are more likely to be satisfied with their current marital condition compared with opportunities for seeking a new partner. In other words, women appear to internalize and accept the negative assessments of their obesity," the authors said.

Obese men, on the other hand, may be more likely to have marital problems because their wives may be pressuring them to lose weight; such pressure may lead to hostility and conflict. Also, the authors speculate that men are less likely to accept the negative social view about body weight than women.

I don't agree with that theory at all. Especially the part: "One theory about why obese women were happier with their marriages is related to recognizing their decreased value in the marriage market in a society that stigmatizes obesity. As a result, obese women are more likely to be satisfied with their current marital condition compared with opportunities for seeking a new partner. In other words, women appear to internalize and accept the negative assessments of their obesity," the authors said.

I don't understand why someone would just give up on their health and weight issues and assume that her husband is going to stay with her just because she has a ring on her finger.

I've heard women say, "Yeah, I hardly even shave my legs anymore...who cares, I'm married." And, "I never did lose that pregnancy weight, but I'm married now, so it doesn't matter."

If he is no longer attracted to her, he will look elsewhere. Call me a generalist, but when you've seen, experienced and heard it all...I choose to categorize. I'd say about 1-5% of the men in this world are loyal and decent human beings.

That's just my opinion...I'm not trying to cite something to back up my post. They are just my thoughts. I guess I'm just vein...my personal sin.

Thanks for the website info...I'll have to check it out.

1-5% of men are loyal decent human beings?! Are you serious? Good god, that's a pretty pessimistic view of men.

Maybe that shouldn't be surprising to readers, considering your pessimistic, throw in the towel, views on other topics.
