SAME OLD STORY--SAME OLD SITUATION

Gardaí probe horror attack on woman

A night out in an Ireland Castlebar for a young non-national ended in a horrific sexual and physical assault before she was dumped at the side of a country road. Gardaí in the county town are investigating what they describe as a “serious assault” on the 21-year-old woman at the weekend.

After leaving Mantra Nightclub at the Welcome Inn Hotel shortly after 1.45am on Sunday morning, the young woman got into a car, which she believed was a taxi. But disaster struck when the male driver of the dark coloured car drove to a quiet rural area on the Snug-boro Road where the assault took place.

The woman with dark shoulder length hair, which was tied up in a ponytail, had parted company with her friends shortly before the incident occurred. After being subjected to rape, the woman was thrown from the car and left at the side of the road before the man drove off.

The woman was in an extremely distressed state when a young couple, travelling in a car, spotted her at 3am and brought her home. It was then that the devastated woman’s friends reported the incident to Gardaí and she was taken to Mayo General Hospital for treatment. The young lady has only been living and working in Castlebar for the past three months.

Gardaí investigating the “serious assault” are checking CCTV footage in the area to help track down the attacker. However, they are anxious to speak to anyone who may have seen the young woman, who was wearing a turquoise blue hooded top with blue jeans and black boots, leave the nightclub or get into a car. “The young woman was wearing a bright blue hoodie and we’re appealing to anyone who was outside the club and may have seen her get into a car to contact us,” noted a Garda spokesperson.

It was a busy weekend in Castlebar with many students celebrating the end of college exams and Gardaí say the area around New Antrim Street would have been busy at the time as many people were making their way to local takeaways or heading home. Those who may have travelled in the Snugboro area at the time of the incident and may have spotted a car parked at the side of the road are also asked to contact Gardaí immediately. “This is a serious assault and we are appealing to anyone with information, which may assist us, to come forward,” noted a Garda spokesperson.

The incident, which is one of the worst of its kind to be reported in Mayo in recent years, has shocked the town of Castlebar. New Antrim Street is one of the busiest areas of the town at the weekend with large crowds of young people congregating in the area where there are a number of late night bars as well as the Mantra nightclub.
