Caleb Joseph Anderson was more than a typical teenager. The bright and slenderly-built seventeen-year-old lived in Chino Valley, Arizona with his mother, Diane, and father, Kevin Anderson, who holds a doctorate in microbiology. Caleb was known to be an intelligent and responsible youth, who suffered from heart problems. He enjoyed school and his part-time job at Wetzel's Pretzel, at the Gateway Mall in nearby Prescott.
On June 7, 2006, Kevin and Diane said goodbye to Caleb as they left their suburban home for a business trip to North Carolina. The next day they tried several times to call their son at home, repeatedly leaving messages. After not receiving any answer from Caleb, the concerned couple called his job, only to learn he failed to show up for a work. A very worried Kevin and Diane rushed back to Arizona and found the house in total disarray. A knife was found stuck into the center of a couch cushion and their 1994 Chevrolet van was missing. The now frightened couple immediately contacted the local police.
Investigators from the Chino Valley Police Department (CVPD) arrived and questioned the distraught parents. "It's never like him," Diane told the police. "He has been very punctual and reliable." When asked about the knife, Diane said that her son did collect knives. "Caleb wouldn't do that with the knives," she told them.
Investigators also found Caleb's wallet, money, cell phone, heart medication and glasses were still in the house. No clothing had been taken. "After our investigation, we found many suspicious elements, but we did not find any concrete evidence of an abduction," said Detective Vincent Schaan of the CVPD.
Kevin and Diane did believe their son was the victim of foul play. A city-wide search was started for the missing youth. Pleas were made to the public for help in finding him. "We need the police and everyone else who can help to understand our sense of urgency," said Kevin. All law enforcement agencies were notified throughout the state about the missing youth.
Family, friends, neighbors and schoolmates of Caleb's were questioned. "All of his friends have been contacted and they're flabbergasted," said Kevin. "I've talked to his girlfriend's mother and she says her daughter is just beside herself." Six days went by and authorities still could not find Caleb. There was not enough evidence found to initiate and Amber Alert, or to call the FBI into the investigation.
Caleb's parents continued to believe their son had been taken against his will. "I'm frustrated because I'm getting the sense that if there had been blood on the carpet, we would have gotten a different level of attention," said Kevin. "You know, for us it always comes back to his glasses," said Diane. "He would never leave without his glasses."
Law enforcement authorities consider Caleb Anderson to be a missing and endangered person. He may still be in the local area, or may have traveled to Iowa. Caleb may also be in need of medication for a heart ailment. Anyone with information on his whereabouts and/or this case is urged to immediately contact the Chino Valley Police Department (928-636-4223).
