Jessica Dodd was a teenager who liked to show her independence and individuality. She had completed her Junior year at Corbin High School and was looking forward to her Senior year. Jessica was very active in school as a member of the ROTC and Humana Club. Young Jessica lived in Corbin, Kentucky with her mother, Candace Dodd and two brothers.
On Monday afternoon, June 26, 2006 Candace had to go to a scheduled appointment with a doctor. Jessica remained home to watch her brother. When her mother returned home, Jessica was nowhere to be found. It was only four days before her seventeenth birthday. Neighbors told the frightened woman that Jessica approached them and asked them to watch the boy for a short while. "The neighbors said they saw her walking through there with a backpack at about 3:30 p.m. Monday," said Candace to police who had been called in to look for the missing girl. "That was the last time anyone's heard from her. I'm about at the end of my rope."
Jessica had only taken a few jeans and tops, but not her driving permit. Investigators from the Corbin Police Department started a search for Jessica and questioned anyone who knew her and her family. They learned that Jessica had been seen in the Woodbine area with a man named A.J. and two of his friends.
It was also suspected by her mother and authorities that drugs could possibly have been involved in the girl's disappearance. "She's usually a pretty responsible kid," said her mother. "It's just been the last six to eight months, she's started to change. I thought it was just a teenage thing, but not this. Not just leave and not tell anybody. These people I've been hearing she's hanging around with do that sort of stuff. She could be doing pills or whatever they are doing."
Investigators followed every lead. The days turned into weeks and the search was expanded to statewide. "It's my belief, through information, that she's still somewhere in the Corbin, Whitley, Laurel, Knox County areas," said Corbin Police Captain Tim Helton. "And now Jessica's mom is asking the entire community to come together and help her find her daughter."
Candace pleaded to the public for help in locating her daughter. "If anybody out there has seen her, if you have any children, this is awful. This is the worst thing that I have ever had to go through. So if you've seen her, please call," said the distraught Candace. "I just really miss her and we're really worried."
It has been several weeks since Jessica Dodd disappeared. Law enforcement authorities consider her to be a missing and possibly endangered person and the possible victim of an abduction. Jessica has a pierced navel and a scar on her stomach. She may also have dyed her hair. Anyone with information on her whereabouts and/or this case is urged to immediately contact the Corbin Police Department (606-528-1122).
