A REAL "SCAG"
Turns out good old Mary put WHISKEY (probably the really cheap stuff, too...) in her 4 month-old infant's formula because she said her baby was "teething". My first instinct? "This is the biggest load of horse crap I've never heard!" First of all, 4 months is pretty early to start "teething", and IF SO, then WHY WHISKEY? Why not baby ambusol?
My initial prognosis? A mentally disturbed, potentially post-partum depressed woman who couldn't stand her child crying and wanted her to SLEEP. She is probably a single mother with multiple children and no male/father help. Now that is just my GUESS. If I'm wrong, then someone please correct me.
I'm sick of preaching my usual uppity sarcastic "Darwin's Theory"...let's "fix" or kill off all the stupid people. Because like it or not, no matter how much we laugh about it or complain about them, and "what is wrong with our society?", it is STILL going on and it is going to continue.
We have to figure out as a community...an interested group with a common goal to get involved and stop what is going on. You know those people who condone illegal or unacceptable behavior and just turn their cheek. Those people know who they are.
The other people out there who I HOPE are the other decent percentage that comes forward when they see or feel something "strange" and say, "Hey...I don't think this lady has both oars in the water...can you check on her and her baby?"
This child could have DIED.
Another crucial BOTTOM LINE: Where is the father??? I will refrain from my usual "generalizations", so I will give whoever this "sperm donor" is the benefit of the doubt. However, I'd be a terrible juror...I'd put money on what I'm thinking...and I DON'T gamble.
Here's the sick story:
(Indianapolis, IN)--A mother was arrested after giving her 4-month-old girl whiskey in her bottle, police said. Indianapolis Metro police said Mary Scaggs, 28, faces two counts of neglect of a dependent and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
A test revealed that the child had a blood-alcohol level of 0.048. Investigators said Scaggs told the hospital that she had put whiskey on the girl's gums because she was teething. Police later determined that Scaggs had put whiskey in the girl's bottle, mixed with formula to try to get her to stop crying.

Excuse: "She wasn't doing anything to hurt the baby, and she thought she was helping the baby because the baby had been up all night crying," said Skaggs' mother, who didn't want to be identified. "It wasn't anything in malice or intent to harm in any way, shape or form."
If she is so willing to stand up for her daughter,
why doesn't she want to be identified?
Excuse: Skaggs' mother said her daughter tried to soothe her crying baby's pain by rubbing whiskey on her gums, a so-called home remedy that Skaggs told police she had tried before.
"Apparently, it didn't work like it did the first time. (She's done this more than once? Go figure...) The baby continued to cry, so she added whiskey to the formula," said Indianapolis Metro police Sgt. Matt Mount.
Skaggs told police she poured some whiskey in the bottle, mixed with formula, and fed it to the girl, who passed out. Officials said they think the infant consumed about 2.5 ounces of whiskey. The baby is doing fine and has been placed in foster care. Skaggs faces two counts of neglect of a dependent and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Really unbelievable.. How sad. The woman is a liar and should not be allowed to have any further children.. she lost that privilege when she intentionally added alcohol to the child's bottle.
Yes, the child could have died, but she also could have brain damage from the alcohol..
I am curious as to how the police even knew to go check on this situation..
Well, we are thankful that SHE is the one that called the ambulance when the baby PASSED OUT. If she hadn't called, then who knows what could have or would have happened.
I just have to wonder about her previous pattern of behavior? Is this her first child? Where's the father? Has she been evaluated post-partum with her OBYGN for signs of depression? There would be medical records of this. Also, is there a history of Munchausen Syndrome in the family?

Nevermind the above link...I meant Munchausen Syndrome BY PROXY. Big difference...

If she called the ambulance--i would think she really did not mean to hurt the child or it is munchausen syndrome by proxy.. but, is that not pretty rare?? either way, very sad situation.
Wanna hear something even crazier? When I was a new mother (8 years ago) I checked out a bunch of books from our county library regarding the care of babies and in one of them it said that one way to soothe a baby that was teething was to rub whiskey on its gums! I was educated enough to realize that was idiotic, but can you believe it was even published???? I can't remember the title of the book, it was royal blue with a moon on the front I think. I remember how shocked I was when I read it - and I told several people and they couldn't believe it was in there either!
Actually that is a "OLD SCHOOL" method. I'm talkin' WAY BACK. Not the 70's...not the 80's...not the 90's...not in today's day either!
My step dad was born in the late 30's early 40's and lived on a FARM with no plumbing. They used brandy for things like that.
Don't forget in the early 70's OBYGN's told women it was OK to have a glass of wine with dinner, too. Example...my mother told me!
The only thing I can think of is this girl is from the BACKHILLS of Kentucky or West Virginia.
Ok, now I'm being rude. lol
One of my twins started teething at 3 months and it was a nightmare! My great grandmother was hell bent on me rubbing whiskey on her gums. I ended up buying stock in baby oragel and used the whiskey on me!!
How does anyone go from rubbing it on gums to pouring a shot in a bottle? Big, huge difference!
This woman knew what she did was moronic, thats why she lied in the beginning. She wasnt trying to help her baby sleep, she wanted sleep and it seems to me that the charges she faces should be worse than neglect and contributing to delinquency.
I'm with you Michelle! Get rid of all the stupid people..some people are just beyond help!
I remember when I was getting in my 12 year molars. My mother (recent European immigrant) gave me a gauze with whiskey to put on my gums. It tasted so awful, I was careful not to compplain about the pain again.
...But to put it in a baby's bottle???
Darby Said"How does anyone go from rubbing it on gums to pouring a shot in a bottle?"
They build up a tolerance over time.
Mom used whiskey and honey on me when I was two. I didn't have to go to rehab until I was 29.
